Stanford Wellness Collaborative

Fitness is an important determinant of health and wellness. The new Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation provides the opportunity for Stanford students, faculty, staff and the greater community to benefit from extensive facilities and programs facilitating a lifelong commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Within the recreation center is the Lacob Family Sports Medicine & Human Performance Center which houses the Human Performance Lab (HPL). The HPL is dedicated to the measurement and study of human physiology and movement. “Human Performance” refers to movement, fitness, and state of well being that can apply across the fitness spectrum. The aim of the HPL is to maximize health through physical activity, to maintain a level of fitness necessary to go through daily activities, and to prevent illness and disease (cardiovascular disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome low bone density, winter colds, and flu). Stressing the body with exercise and movement has been shown to reduce stress, increase mental acuity, increase concentration and overall energy levels. As part of the Stanford Wellness Collaborate, the team at the Human Performance Lab incorporates physiological and biomechanical testing into everyday health and fitness to individualize fitness goals using sport science.
